Description: One of the objectives for GDIT 706 was to construct an online presence in Blackboard by creating a Blackboard site appropriate for the instruction of an online course. The artifacts included contain resources from my asynchronous online Mathematics course for undergraduate education majors. To create a supportive learning environment, I begin with a personally created Welcome Video for students to learn about my background and my teaching philosophy. Discussion Boards for collaborative work and Journals for private conversations with the instructor are also included. To create a flexible and diverse learning environment, the course is replete with resources for gaining content knowledge. Students may choose which resource best fits their individual learning style. These resources include videos, Power Points, websites, and textbook resources. There is a direct link within the course to access the companion website, which contains worked out examples, practice problems, video instruction, and an Ask My Instructor feature providing choices for students and flexibility in meeting unique needs of the learners. I have also included the final project for Statistics 3 as it contains contemporary research on blended learning, flipped learning and the effective use of online course resources, specifically for this mathematics course.
Reflection: The development of this course has been affected by all of the learning that has taken place while I have been in this program. To name just a few examples of learning incorporated in these artifacts, there was the initial fear of creating my own digital story in Dr. Heo’s course that needed to be overcome for the evolution of a Welcome Video, There was learning in the research of Mathematics content pedagogy for the Statistics 3 project in Dr. Kanyongo’s course. Creating an online course was aided by the use of the ADDIE model for development and management of course content in Dr. Martin’s course. The idea to incorporate a well written online participation contract to communicate clear expectations of ethical behavior was emphasized in Dr. Maurino’s Ethics and Leadership. The reflection does not end with the development or the implementation, but rather the reflection on my practice is ongoing as I continue to use data to inform the decisions made for management, redesign and continual transformation of this course. I will be offering this course, housed in Blackboard, again this summer and look forward to learning new managing skills including the addition of formative assessments within several of the videos through the use of the technology platform eduCanon. This management technique will allow for capture of statistics related to use of video resources and understanding through embedded assessment.
