Presentation

International Research Conference

This was my first presentation for a conference sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi.  We  recently re-activated our chapter for this International Honor Society in Education, and involvement in their second research conference will place Franciscan University of Steubenville in a position to be a presence and voice for Catholic leadership in Education. The collaboration of such a diverse group of educators, representing K-20 institutions all over the world affords the opportunity to share valuable knowledge, experience and ideas with peers

Brevi Talk

Although under construction at the moment, an online resource for teaching is being created. I was asked to share a few ideas for formative assessment utilizing an integrated approach for measuring learning. This is my contribution, with the help of my students' participation.

Description: As a member of the Online Learning SIG for ISTE, the opportunity arose to be a part of an Ignite session of learning at the 2015 Conference.  The format for Ignite entails a group of individuals who have only 5 minutes to “tell their story” using 20 slides on automatic play.  As a representation of the work of teacher preparation, I was able to share the field experience we have been able to provide to our students due to our partnership with virtual K-12 schools.  The artifact (click on image) provided is a pdf of the 20 slides I shared with the audience to tell my story.

Reflection:  This was by far the scariest presentation I have ever given simply because of the knowledge that you have no control over the pace of the slides being presented.  I remember practicing in my hotel room for hours just trying to get my monologue for the first few slides paced correctly and sounding more like a story and less like a script.  I ended up presenting without the script in order to communicate the passion I felt for this “story” and it paid off!  Due to my involvement in this presentation, the Online Learning SIG president has asked me to present a webinar for early fall 2016 presenting my dissertation research. I consider this opportunity a real privilege.

Coding Club

Preservice teachers gained valuable instruction experience as they helped local students with the Hour of Code. We partnered with the local library whose expert staff obtained tablet devices for us to use in a 1-1 learning environment.

Many K-12 schools are using the Google Education Suite of tools and apps for increased collaboration, communication, efficiency and student learning.  It is important for me to be able to equip my students with the knowledge and tools needed for becoming an effective educator and professional.
