GDIT 709 Final Project

Description:  One of the important features of a written proposal includes planned techniques for formatively assessing the design of instruction.  These evaluative steps are imperative in the process of collecting and analyzing information in order to maintain a learning environment of continued growth.  The artifact included for this indicator is the final project for GDIT 709, Instructional Program Development.  In this course, the systematic design of a written proposal for the development of an online mathematics course yielded evidence of designing maintenance elements to ensure the development of an effective learning environment. The formative evaluation (pp 20-24) includes a preliminary self-review, an expert review and small group review.  Examination of the aspects associated with the necessary technology was compared with the Quality Matters rubric in the self-review.  The expert review included discussion with the Director of Online Instruction concerning course navigation and accessibility. Finally, the small group review allows for student feedback of ease of technology use and relevance of technology integration assignments. These maintenance elements are designed to improve instructional strategies to increase learner outcomes.

Reflection:  Effective teachers reflect upon their instruction and their student outcomes to determine opportunities for redesign of lessons for improved learning.  This is a characteristic that has been evident in my teaching for quite some time.  However, to establish a plan of intentional steps to be taken before, during and after instruction is the idea behind this particular indicator.  As I have mentioned, prior to this program, many of the steps I took to improve my instruction for increased learner outcomes were based on intuition and observation.  I had experience teaching my own children as well as the variety of students I served as a professional.  With this experience, I gained intuitive behaviors that were not focused, intentional or specific.  This project helped me to gain an awareness of the “why” and the “when” behind the “what”.  Additionally, the systematic approach to planning has been beneficial particularly with the addition of technology integration within my own instruction. I have been empowered to think about potential problems, addressing the needs of all learners, and increasing the learning by putting a few elements in place to preserve the effectiveness of the learning environment. In addition to what is mentioned in the artifact, I have created quick tutorial videos for my students to support them in their technology knowledge.
