I am able to create instructional design products based on learning principles and research-based best practices.

Description: The video included for this indicator was created in GDIT 705 Courseware Design as a final project.  The objective was to create a tutorial that included principles of multimedia appropriate for the content and the context.  My video was created for pre-service teachers enrolled in a Mathematics content course.  The necessity of providing worked out examples in mathematics is a research-based best practice for this particular discipline.  The learner utilizing this instructional design product is being formed in not only content knowledge, but pedagogical knowledge as well.  Inserting descriptions and examples of multimedia principles throughout the content provides technological pedagogical content knowledge.

Reflection:  The creation of this video tutorial was a tremendous learning exercise as I applied the new knowledge I gained from the course discussion, activities and text, Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning, to the design of instruction for my students.  I was able to incorporate learning principles such as the use of navigational maps, guiding questions, and spatial contiguity.   This tutorial can be learner paced and the use of social cues, using a conversational style of voice, allows progress at a very reasonable pace. In order to be effective in the beginning cognitive skill acquisition level, the material should be dual mode, which it is, and help learners make self-explanation processes during the worked out example. The information was broken down into steps using signaling.  Additionally, there were no extraneous aural stimulations and text was kept to a minimum.  It was most effective to have had this experience early in our program as it impacted the rest of my instructional design products for Duquesne as well as those products designed and redesigned for my students.  The real beneficiary of my new knowledge after all is my students.  It is especially exciting to see their application of these principles as they design for students in their field and clinical experiences. The pay it forward concept of education!
